In this procedure, the breasts are enlarged by surgical placement of implants behind the breasts. Incisions are made either in the armpits, just below the breast, or around the areola. Breast implants, which are silicone shells filled with either saline (salt water) or silicone gel, are inserted either beneath the breast tissue, or below the pectoral (chest) muscle.

Breast augmentation is usually done under general anaesthesia and takes 1.5 to 2 hours. A hospital stay is typically not required. Recovery time is about 1 to 2 weeks.
